After the Albigensian Crusade, the South of France east passed under the cut of the Kingdom of France and the frontier zone with Spain was located in Corbières very close. After the Treaty of the Pyrenees of 1659, the border is now after Roussillon but there still remains the traces of this frontier zone with the medieval fortresses which were used for defending it.

One of the “vertigal fortresses of the cathar country”, Peyrepertuse marries the natural relief of the mountain to protect itself from possible attackers.
